For some time now I have been writing on these pages about works which can be called be an overall term “land art”. It proves to be quite popular worldwide and up until now I have mostly included international artists working around the world. This time, however, I would like to focus on the work done in Poland and by Polish artists, as the trend has also been popular for some years now also here. Or maybe I just want to make you all know that, quoting a Polish Renaissance writer, Mikołaj Rej,
“Let it by all and sundry foreign nations be known
that Poles are no Anserinae — they have a language of their own.”
And we also have Polish artists who work in the field of land art.
In fact, we have many of artists and along them – also people who are interested in this kind of art who, furthermore, noticed the potential of the trend and for three years now some active people here, where I live, have been organizing Land Art Festival, inviting artists from Poland and every year some international guests. The idea is to create land art works and installations in the picturesque region of Roztocze. The installations must respect the landscape perspectives, scale and the character of the chosen area (every year, the location differs slightly, but every time it is a place close to main towns where the tourism concentrates), they should use natural, organic materials, best if this materials are obtained on spot – yet the artists remain free to chose the subject and the material he prefers. The works over the three editions have varied largely, showing the diversity of ideas which can be pigeon-holed as “land art”. Sometimes they blend perfectly into the landscape, sometime – stand out drastically surprising the tourists who do not expect works of art in this natural location.
I decided I want to show some of the works – starting from the ones created for this year’s edition. I hope you will enjoy them.
For this year’s edition the organizers chose one particular location: Zwierzyniec, and specifically – a place called “Zwierzyńczyk”. It is a freshly renovated, restored to its former glory park-and-palace complex over the ponds and a channel. Greenery is reflected in the mirror of water. There are alleys and footbridges for strollers. As a result of this perspective virtually entire Zwierzyńczyk has become not as much an outdoor exposition.
The first work I want to present is a piece by young Polish artsits, Natalia Ostrowska and Agnieszka Waseńczuk. It is entitled “Thrombotic wilderness” – a blood-red object made of rope braided strings spread between the trees. It was one of few works which stood out sharply from the environment, at the same time referring to it. It resembled an empty cocoon or other construction created by an insect, it slightly also looks like a cage. It was something both light and decorative, but also oppressive. Made of red strings it was supposed to awake associations with a living organism, dissected veins where blood pulsates.
