This is a title of a short animation created by young Polish animator, Tytus Majewski, which I have found accidentally – as it happens so often – while looking for the lyrics of a popular Polish lullaby which I needed for my work.
“Once There Was a King” is an interpretation of this lullaby based on a poem written by Polish poet Janina Porazińska. The short clip is a gruesome story kept in dark colours made by Majewski as his graduation film from the Polish National Film School. The author combines stop motion, paper cutout animation with CG elements to build up the world of this dark fairytale. The film depicts he tragic story of a love triangle between a king, a princess and a page. According to some critics, “Majewski’s atmospheric adaptation […] is cut from the same gruesome cloth that keeps nightlight companies in business”.
The atmospheric music for the clip was created by Maria Peszek, an extremely talented and versatile Polish singer, songwriter, actress. You can also read the entire story in the comments to the clip and at its end.
